It was a stunning sight walking before dawn this morning and seeing the full moon with a soft atmospheric glow around it. There are few things as beautiful on this Earth (or at least seen from this Earth).  It would not be possible to recount all the songs or verse inspired by this very sight.  Although the moon appeared quite different from the last time I saw it,  it occurred to me that it remained absolutely the same. What had changed were the conditions under which I was viewing it.   These conditions create the “lens” by which I view the moon – or anything else in life.
My faith is a constant struggle to grasp the love and goodness of God – based on his words and promises – rather than basing it on the changing conditions and circumstances of my life.  On certain days, the moon appears to be waning – or gone altogether.  A certain amount of experience with lunar cycles and changing weather conditions soon teaches us otherwise.  Experiences in life and faith show us that God remains constant.  His desire for our good, his love-driven care for us, to rescue us from ourselves, will not waver.  The wavering is ours to own.
“What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are.”
